Makawao Buddhist Temple is Closed for Non-Essential Activity

Effective August 26, 2021, Makawao Hongwanji Mission is honoring the Mayor’s request and asks that all Sangha members, affiliated organizations, and friends of the temple to voluntarily curb non-essential activities at the temple, including non-religious gatherings, for 21 days (specifics to be announced when approved by Governor Ige).

The reason is compelling: We do not want to break the healthcare system of Maui! Rising infections and hospitalizations in Maui County, and across the State of Hawaii, are stressing the healthcare system of Maui. With only one acute care hospital and limited local resources serving all of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai, we must sacrifice our personal convenience for the greater good of all people.

Live-streaming of Services & Buddhist Education

Sunday Service, Sunrise Service, and Chanting the Shōshinge are live-streamed from the Temple Hall.

Buddhist Study Classes, Seminars, and Workshops will be offered via Zoom video-conferencing.
